A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 13, Test 1, Writing. Writing has no single correct answer, so this page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.
Cambridge IELTS 13, Test 1, Writing-এর স্টাডি কম্প্যানিয়ন। এখানে টাস্ক বিশ্লেষণ, কাঠামো, দরকারি ভাষা ও টিপস — আমাদের নিজের ভাষায়।
Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Road Access to a City Hospital — 2007 vs 2010 (Two Maps)
What the task shows: two maps of the roads around a city hospital, in 2007 and 2010. You must summarise the main features and make comparisons. This is a map comparison — focus on what was added, removed and changed, using location and direction language. টাস্কে যা আছে: শহরের একটি হাসপাতালের চারপাশের রাস্তার দুটি মানচিত্র (২০০৭ ও ২০১০)। কী যোগ, সরানো ও বদলানো হয়েছে — অবস্থান-ভাষা ব্যবহার করুন।
Main changes (মূল পরিবর্তন)
- Roundabouts added: In 2010 two new roundabouts were built on the roads leading to the hospital, replacing direct entrances from Hospital Road. ২০১০-এ দুটি রাউন্ডঅ্যাবাউট যোগ।
- Car parks separated: The single 2007 car park (staff and public) became a separate Public car park and Staff car park. পার্কিং আলাদা: পাবলিক ও স্টাফ।
- Bus provision: The bus stop on City Road was replaced by a bus station. বাস স্টপ → বাস স্টেশন।
- Kept: The hospital, Ring Road, Hospital Road and City Road remain. হাসপাতাল, রিং রোড, রাস্তা অটুট।
Overview to aim for: access to the hospital was made smoother and better organised — traffic was routed through roundabouts, parking was split for staff and the public, and bus users got a proper station. ওভারভিউ: হাসপাতালে প্রবেশ সহজ ও সুসংগঠিত হয়েছে — রাউন্ডঅ্যাবাউট, আলাদা পার্কিং, বাস স্টেশন।
Map tips: use compass and relative position (to the south of, next to, on the corner of) and the passive for change (was replaced by, was converted into, were built). Don't describe every road — select the main changes. অবস্থান ও passive ব্যবহার করুন; মূল পরিবর্তন বাছুন।
Task 2: Does Living Where You Must Speak a Foreign Language Cause Serious Problems? (Agree/Disagree)
The prompt (in short): living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree? This is an opinion (agree/disagree) essay — take a clear position and support it. প্রশ্ন: যে দেশে বিদেশি ভাষা বলতে হয়, সেখানে বাস করা ব্যবহারিক ও সামাজিক সমস্যা তৈরি করতে পারে। কতটা একমত? স্পষ্ট অবস্থান নিন।

Yes, problems arise
- Practical: trouble with work, shopping, healthcare and documents. কাজ, কেনাকাটা, চিকিৎসা।
- Social: difficulty making friends and feeling isolated. বন্ধুত্ব, একাকীত্ব।
- Misunderstandings can cause embarrassment or conflict. ভুল বোঝাবুঝি।
But they can be reduced
- Language classes and practice improve fluency over time. ক্লাস ও অনুশীলন।
- Technology (translation apps) helps day to day. অনুবাদ অ্যাপ।
- Local communities and colleagues often help newcomers. সম্প্রদায়ের সাহায্য।
A balanced answer: agree that real problems exist at first, but argue they are usually temporary and can be overcome with effort, support and time. Make your degree of agreement explicit. ভারসাম্যপূর্ণ মত: শুরুতে সমস্যা সত্যি, তবে তা সাধারণত সাময়িক ও কাটিয়ে ওঠা যায়। একমতের মাত্রা স্পষ্ট করুন।
