Passage 1: The Coconut Palm
What it's about: The coconut palm is central to Polynesian and Asian life, yet exotic to the West. The passage describes the whole plant — trunk (timber, furniture), leaves (brushes), flowers (sap for a drink and sugar), the fibrous fruit (coir for ropes), the shell (charcoal, bowls) and the seed (coconut water with growth hormones, copra for oil, milk and cosmetics). It ends with how coconuts spread and are cultivated.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Every part used: trunk for timber/furniture, leaves for brushes, sap for a drink and sugar.
- The fruit: outer waterproof layer, fibrous middle (coir → ropes), woody shell (charcoal, bowls).
- The seed: coconut water has growth hormones; copra makes oil, milk and cosmetics; glycerine has strategic value.
- Spread & cultivation: how coconuts travelled and are grown differently around the world.

Passage 2: How Baby Talk Gives Infant Brains a Boost
What it's about: "Baby talk" — the high-pitched, exaggerated, repetitive way adults speak to babies — helps language development. Studies show babies hear speech before birth, and that mothers and fathers use baby talk differently (the "bridge hypothesis": fathers help children practise the speech they will hear in public). Research using recording vests found that more baby talk boosted babies' babbling and later vocabulary.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Hearing before birth: babies gather the "building blocks" of their native tongue in the womb.
- Mothers vs fathers: VanDam's study — dads don't raise their pitch; the "bridge hypothesis" (1975).
- Recording vests: more baby talk → more babbling and a bigger vocabulary at age two.

Passage 3: Whatever Happened to the Harappan Civilisation?
What it's about: The Bronze-Age Harappan Civilisation of ancient Pakistan and India built sophisticated "megacities" but was abandoned about a thousand years later. Archaeologist Cameron Petrie and colleagues investigate why. Rather than a single cause, new research on rivers, rainfall and settlement locations suggests climate and environmental change played a major role in its slow decline.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Rise and fall: we know much about the rise but little about the decline (from ~2100 BC).
- Competing theories: river changes, resource exhaustion, invasion, or climate change.
- New evidence: Petrie's team found sites in wrong locations; studied rainfall and grains to reconstruct the climate.
- Conclusion: environmental change is key; more research is vital.
