A study companion for Cambridge IELTS 13, Test 3, Writing. Writing has no single correct answer, so this page gives task analysis, a structure and planning method, useful language and band tips — all in our own words. It does not reprint the book's tasks or sample essays.

Timing: ~20 min on Task 1 (150+ words), ~40 min on Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 is worth twice as much.

Task 1: Top Ten Countries for Electricity Production & Consumption (2014)
What the task shows: a bar chart of the ten largest countries for electricity production and consumption in 2014 (in billion kWh), shown side by side for each country. You must summarise the main features and make comparisons. টাস্কে যা আছে: ২০১৪-তে বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদন ও ব্যবহারে শীর্ষ দশ দেশের বার চার্ট (বিলিয়ন kWh)। তুলনা করুন।
Key figures (মূল সংখ্যা)
- China & USA lead by far: China ~5,398 produced / ~5,322 consumed; USA ~4,099 / ~3,866 — much higher than the rest. চীন ও যুক্তরাষ্ট্র বহু এগিয়ে।
- The others are far smaller: Russia, Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and Korea all under ~1,100. বাকিরা অনেক কম।
- Producers vs consumers: most countries produced slightly more than they used; Germany was a clear exception, consuming more (~582) than it produced (~527). জার্মানি ব্যতিক্রম — উৎপাদনের চেয়ে বেশি ব্যবহার।
Overview to aim for: China and the USA dominated both production and consumption, dwarfing the other eight; and for most countries production and consumption were close, with Germany the main exception. Put these in the overview. ওভারভিউ: চীন-যুক্তরাষ্ট্র শীর্ষে; বেশির ভাগে উৎপাদন≈ব্যবহার, জার্মানি ব্যতিক্রম।
Chart tips: don't list all twenty numbers — group the leaders, the middle and the smallest, and pick out the one country (Germany) that breaks the pattern. Use approximations and comparatives. সব সংখ্যা নয়; গোষ্ঠীবদ্ধ করুন ও ব্যতিক্রম তুলে ধরুন।
Task 2: Is History or Science & Technology More Important? (Discuss Both Views)
The prompt (in short): some people say History is one of the most important school subjects; others think that, in today's world, subjects like Science and Technology are more important. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. A discussion (both-views + opinion) essay. প্রশ্ন: কেউ বলেন ইতিহাস সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ; কেউ বলেন আজকের যুগে বিজ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তি বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। দুই মত ও নিজের মত।

- Helps us avoid repeating mistakes. ভুল না-করা।

Science & Tech is important
- Drives jobs, the economy and innovation. চাকরি ও অর্থনীতি।
- Solves modern problems (health, climate). আধুনিক সমস্যা সমাধান।

A strong opinion balances both: both are valuable and a good curriculum needs each — Science for practical progress, History for wisdom and identity. State your position clearly rather than sitting perfectly on the fence. শক্তিশালী মত: দুটোই দরকার — বিজ্ঞান অগ্রগতির জন্য, ইতিহাস প্রজ্ঞা ও পরিচয়ের জন্য। অবস্থান স্পষ্ট করুন।
