Passage 1: Cutty Sark — the Fastest Sailing Ship of All Time
What it's about: The 19th century saw shipping move from wind to steam and from wood to iron. The fastest sailing vessels were clippers, and Cutty Sark (built 1869 in Scotland) is the only one to survive nearly intact. The passage covers its unusual name (from a Robert Burns poem), its role in the China tea trade, its rivalry with Thermopylae, why it never quite lived up to expectations, its later career carrying wool from Australia, and its eventual preservation as a museum ship in Greenwich after being damaged by fire.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Age of clippers: fast three-masted ships dominated trade until the Suez Canal and steam took over (1869).
- The name: from Burns's poem Tam O'Shanter — a witch's short nightdress; witches supposedly cannot cross water.
- Tea trade & rivalry: designed for speed to China; raced Thermopylae in 1872 but a broken rudder cost it the lead.
- Wool trade & survival: later carried wool from Australia; eventually preserved, then damaged by fire and restored.

Passage 2: Saving the Soil
What it's about: A recent UN report warns that more than a third of the world's soil is endangered, and all farmable soil could disappear within 60 years. Soil grows most of our food, is the source of most antibiotics, locks in carbon (helping fight climate change) and stores water (preventing floods). Intensive agriculture and synthetic fertiliser (the Haber-Bosch process) have degraded it. The passage reviews the causes and possible solutions — from crop rotation to modern projects that could keep soil healthy.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Why soil matters: grows 95% of food, holds bacteria (antibiotics), carbon and water.
- The danger: microorganisms could be lost; recovery would take thousands of years.
- Agriculture & fertiliser: humans don't return nutrients; the Haber-Bosch process brought synthetic fertiliser.
- Solutions: measuring degradation and new techniques to protect soil in the near future.

Passage 3: Book Review — The Happiness Industry
What it's about: A review of William Davies's book The Happiness Industry: How the Government and Big Business Sold Us Well-Being. It criticises "positive psychology" — the modern idea (championed by economist Richard Layard) that happiness is the ultimate self-evident good and can be measured. Davies traces this thinking back to the philosopher Jeremy Bentham (1748–1832), who was far more than a philosopher — an inventor and management thinker — and argues that treating happiness as the only good actually limits deeper moral inquiry.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Positive psychology: Layard's claim that happiness is self-evidently good and measurable.
- Bentham's role: he shaped this way of thinking — the human good is pleasure and the absence of pain. Bentham-
- More than a philosopher: Bentham designed inventions for government, banknotes, food preservation and a prison.
- Davies's argument: making happiness the only good limits moral inquiry. Davies-
