The Importance of Salt

For thousands of years salt was very valuable, mainly because it was the best way to food and stop it going bad. It was so precious that Roman soldiers were partly paid in it, which is where the word comes from. Merchants carried salt across the desert on camels, and cities grew rich from the salt . Because it was worth so much, rulers placed a on salt. In India, a famous against this was led by Gandhi. Today salt is cheap, because we have found easier ways to it — for example, by letting sea water in the sun. As well as flavouring food, salt is spread on in winter, and is used in many processes.
