You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 1–13, which are based on the passage below.

The fabric of legend: Dhaka muslin

A  Two hundred years ago, the most sought-after cloth in the world was made by hand in the villages around Dhaka. Known simply as Dhaka muslin, it was so fine and light that travellers told stories of a whole length of it passing through a finger ring, or of a piece laid on wet grass becoming invisible. Its makers gave its different varieties poetic names such as ‘running water’ and ‘evening dew’, and it was worn by the emperors of the Mughal court and, later, by fashionable women in the salons of Paris and London.

B  The secret of the cloth began in the fields. It was spun from a rare type of cotton plant, known locally as phuti karpas, which grew only along the banks of the Meghna River near Dhaka. Its fibres were too short to be spun by machine, but in the hands of skilled spinners they could be twisted into thread of astonishing fineness. The humid air of the river region was considered essential, since the thread became brittle and broke in dry conditions.

C  Producing the thread required extraordinary patience and skill. The cotton bolls were first cleaned using the jawbone of a catfish, whose tiny teeth acted like a fine comb to remove dirt and seeds. The fibres were then spun on a delicate spindle, usually by young women, whose sense of touch was thought to be most sensitive. Spinning was done in the early morning or late afternoon, when the air was most humid. The finished thread was passed to weavers, and a single piece of the finest muslin could take months to complete on the loom.

D  In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, however, the industry went into steep decline. As the British East India Company took control of Bengal, weavers came under pressure to sell their cloth at prices fixed by the company, and many fell into debt. At the same time, factories in Britain began to produce cheap machine-made cotton, which was shipped to India and sold at lower prices than local cloth. Heavy taxes on Indian textiles entering Britain added to the weavers’ difficulties.

E  By the early twentieth century, true Dhaka muslin had disappeared entirely. The skills of its spinners and weavers were not written down and were gradually forgotten, and the phuti karpas plant itself was thought to be extinct. For a hundred years, the cloth survived only in museums and in descriptions that many people regarded as exaggerated legend.

F  In recent years, a project in Bangladesh has set out to bring it back. Researchers compared the DNA of cotton plants growing wild along the Meghna with samples taken from a dried flower preserved in a museum in London, and found a close match. Seeds from the most promising wild plants were grown on experimental farms, and skilled weavers from the region, whose families have long made the fine jamdani cloth, were trained in the old techniques. The first new pieces of muslin have already been produced, although they are not yet as fine as the best historical examples.

Reading Passage 2

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 14–26, which are based on the passage below.

Do dolphins have names?

A  Dolphins are famously sociable animals. They live in groups called pods, hunt together, play together and look after one another’s young. To coordinate all this activity in the open sea, where the water is often murky and the group may be spread over a wide area, they rely heavily on sound. Researchers have long been fascinated by the rich variety of clicks, whistles and pulsed calls that dolphins produce, and by the question of how much information these sounds carry.

B  Dolphins produce two broad types of sound. Rapid series of clicks are used mainly for echolocation: the dolphin sends out a beam of sound and listens to the returning echoes to find fish and to judge the shape of objects around it. Whistles, by contrast, are used for communication. Unlike humans, dolphins do not produce sound with their throats; instead they push air between structures in their nasal passages, just below the blowhole, which allows them to whistle and click at the same time.

C  In the 1960s, researchers studying captive bottlenose dolphins noticed that each animal seemed to have its own distinctive whistle, which it used far more often than any other. Over the following decades, it became clear that these ‘signature whistles’ develop in the first few months of a dolphin’s life, and that each one has a unique pattern of rising and falling pitch. Once established, a dolphin’s signature whistle usually stays the same for the rest of its life, which can be forty years or more.

D  The most striking evidence that these whistles work like names comes from experiments in which researchers played recordings to wild dolphins through underwater speakers. When a dolphin heard a computer-generated copy of its own signature whistle, it was far more likely to respond, often by calling back, than when it heard the whistle of another dolphin. Because the copies were artificial, the dolphins could not have been reacting to the sound of a particular animal’s voice; they were responding to the pattern itself — just as a person might turn round on hearing their name spoken by a stranger.

E  Dolphins also appear to copy one another’s signature whistles. A mother separated from her calf may produce a copy of her calf’s whistle, and close companions sometimes imitate each other’s. Researchers believe this may be a way of calling a particular individual, much as we might shout a friend’s name across a crowded room. Such copying is rare in the animal world; outside humans, only a few species, including some parrots, are known to use learned vocal labels for other individuals.

F  Whether dolphin communication amounts to a language is far less certain. There is no evidence so far that dolphins combine sounds according to rules to create new meanings, which is the defining feature of human language. Some researchers are now using machine-learning programs to search large collections of recordings for hidden patterns. Others warn that we should be careful not to judge animal communication only by how closely it resembles our own, since dolphins may share information in ways we have not yet imagined.

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 27–40, which are based on the passage below.

Can creativity be learned?

We tend to think of creativity as a gift. The great artists, inventors and scientists of history are often portrayed as geniuses, struck by sudden flashes of inspiration that ordinary people can never expect to experience. Schools and workplaces sometimes reinforce this view, dividing people early into the ‘creative’ and the ‘practical’. Yet research over the past few decades suggests that this picture is largely mistaken, and that creativity is less a rare talent than a set of habits that almost anyone can develop.

Psychologists usually define creativity as the ability to produce ideas that are both original and useful. One common way of measuring it asks people to list as many uses as they can for an everyday object, such as a brick. Psychologist Hannah Price points out that scores on such tests are only loosely related to general intelligence: above a fairly modest level, being more intelligent does not make a person noticeably more creative. What matters more, she argues, is a willingness to keep generating ideas after the obvious ones have been exhausted.

The idea of the sudden flash of inspiration is also misleading. Studies of famous creative breakthroughs show that they are almost always preceded by long periods of hard work and deep knowledge of a field. Historian Leo Grant, who has studied the notebooks of inventors and composers, found that their ‘sudden’ insights usually came after years of experiments, failed attempts and small improvements. In his view, inspiration rewards those who are already prepared, rather than arriving out of nowhere.

If creativity can be developed, how should it be done? Many researchers emphasise the value of separating two kinds of thinking: the generation of ideas and their evaluation. When people judge each idea as soon as it occurs, they tend to stop early and play safe. Designer Mia Torres encourages her teams to produce large numbers of ideas first, however unlikely they seem, and to criticise them only afterwards. Quantity, she believes, is the path to quality: among a hundred ideas, there are likely to be a few good ones, whereas a person who produces only three is relying on luck.

Environment also matters. People are more creative when they feel free to make mistakes, and less creative when they fear being judged or punished for failure. Contact with people from different backgrounds and fields can help, by introducing unfamiliar ideas that can be combined in new ways. Even rest has a role: several studies have found that people who take a break from a difficult problem, especially to do something undemanding such as walking, are more likely to find a solution when they return to it.

In my view, the most important lesson of this research is that we should stop treating creativity as the property of a gifted few. Every person is capable of original thought, and a society that wants new solutions to its problems — in science, business or everyday life — should invest in developing that capacity in everyone. Teaching children that creativity can be practised and improved, like reading or arithmetic, may be one of the most valuable things a school can do.
