1. It’s hot and humid for most of the year, with a long monsoon from roughly June to September when it can pour for days on end. Winter is short but genuinely pleasant.
2. Winter, without a doubt. From December to February the air is cool and dry, the sky is clear, and it’s the season for picnics, weddings and those delicious winter pithas.
3. I think it does, to some extent. A bright, breezy day lifts my spirits, whereas the sticky heat in April and May makes me feel sluggish and a bit irritable.
4. Pretty much every day during the monsoon, because a sudden downpour can flood the streets in minutes. The rest of the year I don’t bother so much.

2. If I can, I stay in with a cup of tea and a good book. Rainy afternoons are also the perfect excuse for khichuri, which is practically a tradition in Bangladeshi homes.
3. An enormous amount — we have one of the wettest monsoons in the world. Some areas in the north-east get several metres of rain a year.
4. I absolutely loved it. My friends and I used to rush outside to play football in the mud or float paper boats in the puddles, and come home soaked to the skin.

Band 9
1. Not as much as I’d like. Between classes and studying I’m indoors most of the day, so I try to make up for it with a walk in the evening when it’s cooler.
2. Yes, there’s a small one about ten minutes away. It’s nothing special — a lawn, a pond and a few benches — but it’s a welcome bit of green in a very concrete neighbourhood.
3. Absolutely. Bangladesh is extremely vulnerable to climate change, so protecting forests like the Sundarbans isn’t just about wildlife; it actually shields millions of people from cyclones.
4. Small things mainly. I carry a cloth bag instead of taking plastic ones, refill a water bottle, and switch off lights and fans when I leave a room. It all adds up, I hope.

3. Yes, very important. Bangladesh is badly affected by climate change, and forests like the Sundarbans protect millions of people from cyclones.
4. I do small things. I use a cloth bag instead of plastic bags, refill my water bottle, and turn off lights and fans when I leave a room.

Band 9 ~2 minutes
I’d like to talk about a time when the weather completely ruined — or at least rearranged — a trip I’d been looking forward to for months. It was last October, right at the tail end of the monsoon.
A group of us had planned a two-day trip to Saint Martin’s Island, the little coral island in the Bay of Bengal. We’d booked the bus to Teknaf, reserved rooms at a small guesthouse, and the plan was to catch the ferry across the next morning and spend the day swimming and cycling around the island.
The weather forecast had looked fine when we left Dhaka, but by the time we reached Teknaf, a deep depression had formed in the bay. Out of nowhere, the sky turned a sort of bruised grey, the wind picked up dramatically and it started lashing down with rain. The coastguard cancelled all ferries for at least two days, so there was simply no way to get across.
In the end, we made the best of it. We spent the next day in Cox’s Bazar instead, watching enormous waves crash onto the beach from the safety of a café, and eating far too much grilled fish.
At first, I felt really frustrated — we’d spent so much time and money organising it, and I’d been dreaming about that clear blue water. But looking back, I think it taught me a useful lesson about not being too attached to plans, especially in a country where nature always has the final say. And funnily enough, that stormy day is the one we still laugh about the most.

The forecast was fine when we left Dhaka, but when we reached Teknaf, a storm had formed in the bay. Suddenly the sky became dark, the wind got very strong, and it started raining heavily. All the ferries were cancelled for two days, so we could not go.
In the end, we went to Cox’s Bazar instead. We watched huge waves on the beach from a café and ate a lot of grilled fish.
At first, I felt very disappointed, because we had spent a lot of time and money on the trip. But later I realised that you cannot always control your plans, especially in Bangladesh. Now, that stormy day is the part of the trip that we laugh about the most.

2. Who is more responsible for protecting the environment — individuals or governments?
3. Why do some people not care about environmental problems?
4. Should rich countries help poorer countries deal with climate change?
5. Can technology solve environmental problems?

Band 9
1. In a great many ways. Rising sea levels are pushing salt water into farmland along the coast, cyclones seem to be getting stronger, and river erosion is washing away villages. As a result, many families have been forced to migrate to the cities, which adds to the pressure there.
2. Both have a role, but I’d argue governments carry the greater responsibility. Individuals can recycle and use less energy, but only governments can regulate industry, invest in renewable power and sign international agreements. Personal choices matter, but they can’t replace policy.
3. Often it’s because the problems feel distant or abstract. If you’re struggling to pay the rent, a temperature rise of two degrees in fifty years can seem far less urgent. There’s also a sense of helplessness — people feel that their own actions won’t make any difference.
4. Yes, I firmly believe so. Wealthy countries produced most of the emissions that caused the problem, while countries like Bangladesh contributed very little but suffer the most. Funding for flood defences and clean energy seems only fair, although it needs to be properly monitored.
5. It can certainly help — solar panels and electric vehicles are already making a difference. However, I don’t think technology alone is enough. We also need to change how much we consume, otherwise any gains will simply be cancelled out.
Band 7
1. In many ways. Rising sea levels are bringing salt water into farmland on the coast, cyclones are getting stronger, and rivers are washing away villages. Because of this, many families move to the cities.
2. Both are responsible, but I think governments are more responsible. People can recycle and save energy, but only governments can control factories, build renewable energy and make international agreements.
3. Perhaps because the problems seem far away. If you have money problems, climate change in fifty years does not feel urgent. Also, some people think their actions will not make a difference.
4. Yes, I think so. Rich countries caused most of the pollution, but countries like Bangladesh suffer the most. So it is fair for them to pay for flood protection and clean energy, but the money should be checked.
5. It can help — for example, solar panels and electric cars. However, technology is not enough. We also need to consume less, or the benefits will disappear.
Band 5–6

2. Both responsible but i think government is more. People can recycle and save energy but only government can control factory and make renewable energy.
3. Maybe problem seem far away. If you have money problem, climate change in fifty year is not urgent. Also some people think their action not make difference.
