Topic: The internet
1. How often do you use the internet?
2. What do you mainly use the internet for?
3. When did you first start using the internet?
4. Could you live without the internet for a week?
✅ Sample answers at 3 levels (Band 9 / 7 / 5–6) + Bangla explanations
Band 9
1. Pretty much constantly, if I’m honest. My phone is connected from the moment I wake up, and most of my studying happens online as well.
2. A mix of things — research for my course, watching lectures and English videos, keeping in touch with friends, and, of course, more scrolling than I’d like to admit.
3. When I was about twelve, on my father’s old desktop computer with a painfully slow dial-up connection. It took ages for a single page to load.
4. I could, but it would be a struggle. Practically everything from banking to ordering a rickshaw goes through an app now, so I’d feel quite cut off. Then again, it might be a welcome break.
Band 7
1. Almost all the time. My phone is online from the moment I wake up, and I do most of my studying online too.
2. Different things — research for my course, online lectures and English videos, chatting with friends, and a lot of scrolling.
3. When I was about twelve, on my father’s old computer. The connection was very slow, and pages took a long time to load.
4. I could, but it would be difficult. Nowadays I use apps for banking and transport, so I would feel disconnected. But it might also be a nice break.
Band 5–6
1. Almost all time. My phone is online from morning and i study online also.
2. Different thing, research for course, online lecture and English video, chat with friend and many scrolling.
3. When i was twelve in my father old computer. Connection was very slow and page take long time.
4. I can but it is difficult. Now i use app for bank and transport so i feel disconnect. But maybe nice break.

1. Do you pay attention to advertisements?
2. Where do you usually see adverts?
3. Have you ever bought something because of an advert?
4. Is there an advert you particularly remember?
✅ Sample answers at 3 levels (Band 9 / 7 / 5–6) + Bangla explanations
Band 9
1. I try not to, but they’re so cleverly targeted these days that it’s hard to ignore them completely. If I look at a pair of shoes online, I’ll see them following me around for days.
2. Mainly on social media and YouTube. In Dhaka there are also enormous billboards everywhere, so you’re bombarded even when you’re stuck in traffic.
3. Yes, a pair of wireless earphones last year. The advert showed a student studying peacefully in a noisy café, and I was completely sold — although the real ones weren’t quite as magical.
4. There was a telecom advert during Eid a few years ago about a young man calling his mother from abroad. It was very simple, but it struck a chord with almost everyone because so many families have someone working overseas.
Band 7
1. I try not to, but they are very well targeted now, so it is hard to ignore them. If I look at shoes online, I see adverts for them for days.
2. Mostly on social media and YouTube. In Dhaka there are also huge billboards everywhere, so you see adverts even in traffic.
3. Yes, some wireless earphones last year. The advert showed a student studying quietly in a noisy café, and I believed it, but they were not as good as in the advert.
4. Yes, a phone company advert at Eid about a young man calling his mother from abroad. It was simple but very emotional, because many families have someone working abroad.

3. Do you think online shopping is safe?
4. Do you prefer shopping online or in shops?
✅ Sample answers at 3 levels (Band 9 / 7 / 5–6) + Bangla explanations
Band 9
1. Quite regularly, yes, especially since delivery services have become so reliable. It saves me battling through traffic to get to the shops.
2. Mostly books, electronics and household bits and pieces. I’m more cautious with clothes, because sizes are unpredictable and returning things can be a hassle.
3. Generally, as long as you stick to well-known sites. I usually choose cash on delivery with new sellers, just to be safe, because there are plenty of scams around.
4. It depends on what I’m buying. Online is great for convenience and comparing prices, but for clothes or anything expensive, I like to see and touch the product first.
Band 7

Band 9 ~2 minutes
An app I use almost every day is a language-learning app with short, game-like lessons. I’ve been using it for about eighteen months now, mainly to improve my English vocabulary, although I’ve recently started dabbling in a little Japanese as well.
I first came across it through a friend who was preparing for IELTS. She kept boasting about her “streak” — the number of days in a row she had practised — and I was curious, so I downloaded it, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Basically, it lets you practise in very small chunks. Each lesson takes about five minutes and mixes different skills: you match words, translate sentences, listen to native speakers and even speak into the microphone so it can check your pronunciation. I usually do a couple of lessons on the metro in the morning and another before bed. It also sends gentle reminders if I forget, which, admittedly, I need.
The main reason I find it so useful is that it fits into my busy routine. I don’t need to set aside an hour, so I actually stick with it. Secondly, it makes learning feel like a game, with points and leaderboards, so it’s genuinely motivating. And it tracks my progress, which is really encouraging when I can see how far I’ve come.
The only downside is that it can’t replace real conversation practice, so I still try to speak English with friends. But as a daily habit, it’s been invaluable.
Band 7 ~1.5–2 minutes
An app I use almost every day is a language-learning app with short lessons that are like games. I have used it for about eighteen months, mainly to learn English vocabulary, and recently I started learning a little Japanese too.
I found out about it from a friend who was preparing for IELTS. She often talked about her “streak”, which is the number of days she had practised without stopping, so I downloaded it and started using it every day.
It lets you practise in small parts. Each lesson takes about five minutes, and you match words, translate sentences, listen to native speakers and speak into the microphone to check your pronunciation. I usually do two lessons on the metro and one before bed, and it reminds me if I forget.
It is useful for several reasons. First, it fits into my busy routine, because I do not need a whole hour. Second, it feels like a game, with points and leaderboards, so it is motivating. Also, it shows my progress, which encourages me.
The only problem is that it cannot replace real conversation, so I still practise speaking with friends.

Part 3 — Discussion
4–5 minutes · deeper questions about technology, the internet & advertising
Answers here should be longer and more developed — opinion, reason, and often the other side too. উত্তর আরও দীর্ঘ।
1. How has the internet changed the way people communicate?
2. Should advertising aimed at children be banned?
3. Is it a problem that tech companies collect so much personal data?
4. Do you think people trust information online too easily?
5. Will online shopping replace traditional shops?
✅ Sample answers at 3 levels (Band 9 / 7 / 5–6) + Bangla explanations
Band 9
1. Profoundly. It’s made communication instant and almost free, so families separated by migration can see each other daily, which was unthinkable a generation ago. On the downside, many conversations have become shorter and more superficial, and people sometimes seem more absorbed in their phones than in the people sitting next to them.
2. I’d support strict limits rather than a total ban. Young children can’t really tell the difference between an advert and entertainment, so marketing unhealthy food or toys directly to them seems unfair. However, a complete ban might be difficult to enforce, especially online.
3. Yes, I think it’s a serious concern. Most people click “agree” without reading the terms, so they have no real idea how their data is used or sold. That said, data also makes many services free and more personalised, so the solution is clearer rules and more transparency, not abandoning technology.
4. Far too easily, unfortunately. Misinformation spreads incredibly fast, particularly on messaging apps, and a lot of people share things without checking the source. I believe media literacy — teaching people how to spot fake news — should be part of every school curriculum.
5. I doubt it will replace them entirely. Online shopping will keep growing because it’s so convenient, but shops offer things the internet can’t, like trying things on, getting immediate advice and the social experience of going out. I suspect the shops that survive will be those that offer an experience, not just products.
Band 7
1. A lot. Communication is now instant and almost free, so families living in different countries can talk every day. However, many conversations are now shorter, and people often look at their phones instead of talking to the people around them.
2. I think there should be strict limits, but not a complete ban. Young children cannot always tell the difference between adverts and entertainment, so advertising unhealthy food to them is unfair. But a total ban would be hard to control online.
3. Yes, it is a problem. Most people accept the terms without reading them, so they do not know how their data is used. However, data also makes many services free, so we need clearer rules rather than stopping using technology.
4. Yes, too easily. False information spreads very quickly, especially on messaging apps, and many people share it without checking. I think schools should teach students how to recognise fake news.
5. I do not think it will replace them completely. Online shopping will grow because it is convenient, but in shops you can try things, get advice and enjoy going out. Shops that offer a good experience will survive.
Band 5–6
1. A lot. Now communication is fast and free so family in different country can talk every day. But conversation is short now and people look phone not talk with people near.
2. I think strict limit but not full ban. Small children can’t understand advert and entertainment difference so unhealthy food advert is unfair. But full ban is hard online.
3. Yes it is problem. Most people accept term without read so they don’t know how data use. But data make many service free so we need clear rule.
4. Yes too easily. False news spread very fast specially in messaging app and many people share without check. School should teach how to know fake news.
5. I don’t think it replace completely. Online shopping will grow because convenient but in shop you can try thing, get advice and enjoy. Good shop will survive.
