The celebration I’d like to talk about is a particular Eid that my family spent at my grandparents’ village home a few years ago. To this day, it stands out as one of my happiest memories.
It happened at the end of Ramadan, and rather than staying in the city as usual, we all travelled several hours to my grandparents’ house in the countryside. Almost the entire extended family was there — my parents, my aunts and uncles, and a whole crowd of cousins I only see once or twice a year.
The day began early, with the men going to the mosque for prayers while a feast was being prepared at home. By mid-morning the house was overflowing with people, laughter and the smell of freshly cooked food. We spent the day eating far too much, exchanging gifts, and simply enjoying one another’s company. In the evening, all the cousins gathered on the rooftop and stayed up talking late into the night.
What made it so memorable, I think, was the sheer sense of togetherness. In our busy city lives we’re scattered and rarely in the same place, so having three generations under one roof felt genuinely special — no phones, no distractions, just family.
Looking back, it wasn’t the food or the gifts that mattered; it was the feeling of belonging. That’s why, out of all the Eids I’ve celebrated, that one has stayed with me the most.
