Band 9  202 words

The table shows how many adults in one country regularly obtained news from five different sources in 2015 and 2025, while the pie chart shows the main reasons why people used social media for news in 2025.

Overall, traditional news sources lost audiences over the decade, whereas online sources gained them, with social media becoming the most popular source by 2025. Speed was the reason most commonly given for choosing social media.

In 2015, television was by far the leading source of news, with 42 million regular viewers, followed by newspapers with 25 million. By 2025, however, television had fallen to 30 million, and newspaper readership had dropped by almost two-thirds to just 9 million. Radio also declined, from 12 to 8 million. In contrast, the number using news websites rose from 18 to 27 million, while social media users more than tripled, from 15 to 48 million, overtaking television.

As for the reasons, 38% of people said they used social media because it was faster than other sources, and just over a quarter (27%) chose it because it was free. A fifth valued the convenience of reading news on their phones, and the remaining 15% relied on stories shared by friends.

Band 7  194 words

The table shows the number of adults in one country who got news from five sources in 2015 and 2025, and the pie chart shows why people used social media for news in 2025.

Overall, the number of people using traditional sources went down, while online sources became more popular. In 2025, social media was the most popular source, and the main reason for using it was that it is faster.

In 2015, television was the most popular source, with 42 million people. Newspapers had 25 million readers and radio had 12 million. By 2025, all of these decreased. Television fell to 30 million, newspapers fell to only 9 million and radio fell to 8 million. On the other hand, news websites increased from 18 million to 27 million. The biggest change was social media, which went up from 15 million to 48 million, so it became more popular than television.

In the pie chart, 38% of people said they used social media for news because it is faster. 27% said it is free, 20% said it is convenient to use on a phone, and 15% said their friends share the news with them.

Band 9  283 words

Over the past decade, social media platforms have overtaken newspapers and television as the main source of news for millions of people. This shift has clear causes, but in my view it is, on balance, a negative development.

The main reason for the change is speed and convenience. News appears on social media almost the moment it happens, and it can be read on a phone at any time, whereas newspapers are printed only once a day and television news is broadcast at fixed times. Social media is also free, while newspaper subscriptions cost money. Furthermore, these platforms show people news that their friends have shared or that matches their interests, which many users find more engaging than a traditional bulletin.

Admittedly, this trend has some benefits. Ordinary citizens can report events that the mainstream media ignore, and people can access a wider range of voices than ever before. Nevertheless, I believe the drawbacks are more serious. Unlike professional journalists, many social media posters do not check their facts, so false information and rumours can spread rapidly, sometimes with dangerous consequences, as has happened during elections and health crises. In addition, algorithms tend to show users only views that they already agree with, creating “echo chambers” that deepen social divisions. Finally, as audiences move online, traditional newspapers lose income and may have to close, reducing the amount of careful, independent reporting.

In conclusion, people increasingly rely on social media for news because it is fast, free and personalised. However, because it spreads misinformation and narrows people’s perspectives, I regard this as largely a negative development, and I believe schools should teach young people how to judge the reliability of what they read online.

Band 7  251 words

Nowadays, many people get their news from social media instead of newspapers or television. In this essay, I will explain why this is happening and whether it is a positive or negative development.

There are several reasons for this trend. Firstly, social media is very fast. People can read the news as soon as something happens, while newspapers come only once a day. Secondly, it is free, but people have to pay for newspapers. Thirdly, it is very convenient, because people can read news on their phones anywhere, for example on the bus or during a break. Also, social media shows news that people are interested in, so they enjoy reading it more.

In my opinion, this is mostly a negative development. Although social media allows ordinary people to share news and gives us many different opinions, there are big problems. The main problem is fake news. Many people share information without checking if it is true, and this can cause panic or confusion. In addition, social media usually shows people only the opinions they already agree with, so they do not learn about other views. Moreover, newspapers are losing money and some of them may close, so there will be fewer good journalists who check the facts carefully.

In conclusion, people use social media for news because it is fast, free and convenient. However, I think it is a negative development because of fake news and one-sided opinions. People should check the news carefully before they believe or share it.

Band 5–6  204 words

Now a days many people get the news from social media and not from newspaper or TV. I will tell why it happen and it is positive or negative.

There is many reason. First social media is very fast, people can see the news quickly but newspaper come one time in a day. Second it is free but newspaper need money. Third it is easy because people can read in phone any place like bus. Also social media show the news which people like.

In my opinion it is negative. Social media is good because normal people can share the news. But the big problem is fake news. Many people share the news but they not check it is true or not, and it make the people confused and afraid. Also social media show only one side opinion. And newspaper lose money and they can close, so good journalist will be less. This is very bad for the country because people need true news.

In conclusion people use social media for news because it is fast, free and easy. But i think it is negative because of fake news. People should check the news before they share it with other people in the internet.
