Why is Grammar Important for IELTS?

ভূমিকা: IELTS এর জন্য ব্যাকরণ কেন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ?

Good grammar is the foundation of clear communication. In the IELTS test, your grammatical range and accuracy are directly assessed in the Writing and Speaking sections, each contributing 25% to your score in those modules. Strong grammar also helps you better understand the Reading and Listening texts, leading to a higher overall band score.

This guide will focus on the most essential grammar rules you need to master to succeed in the IELTS test.

Mastering Verb Tenses (ক্রিয়ার কাল আয়ত্ত করা)

Using the correct tense is vital for describing trends (Task 1), discussing past events (Speaking Part 2), and presenting arguments (Task 2).

Present Simple (সাধারণ বর্তমান)

Used for facts, habits, and regular occurrences.

Example: The chart shows data from 2020. (Fact)
I usually read the news online every day. (Habit)

Past Simple (সাধারণ অতীত)

Used for completed actions in the past.

Example (Task 1): The number of visitors increased sharply in 1995.
Example (Speaking): I visited Cox's Bazar last year.

Present Perfect (পুরাঘটিত বর্তমান)

Used for actions that started in the past and continue to the present, or for past actions with a result in the present.

Example (Task 2): The government has implemented several policies to combat pollution.
Example (Speaking): I have lived in this city for ten years.

Using a Range of Sentence Structures (বিভিন্ন বাক্য গঠন ব্যবহার)

To get a high score (Band 7+), you must use a mix of simple, compound, and complex sentences.

Simple Sentence (সরল বাক্য)

One independent clause.

Example: The internet is a powerful tool.

Compound Sentence (যৌগিক বাক্য)

Two independent clauses joined by a conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).

Example: The internet is a powerful tool, but it can also be a source of misinformation.

Complex Sentence (জটিল বাক্য)

One independent clause and at least one dependent clause.

Example: Although the internet is a powerful tool, it must be used responsibly because it can be a source of misinformation.

Subject-Verb Agreement (কর্তা ও ক্রিয়ার মিল)

A singular subject needs a singular verb, and a plural subject needs a plural verb.

Incorrect: The information in these charts are useful.
Correct: The information in these charts is useful. (The subject is "information," which is singular.)
Incorrect: Each of the students have a different opinion.
Correct: Each of the students has a different opinion. (The subject is "Each," which is singular.)

Articles (A, An, The)

Correct use of articles shows precision in your writing.

'A' vs. 'An'

Use 'a' before a consonant sound and 'an' before a vowel sound.

Example: It is a university. (yoo-niversity sound)
Example: He is an honest man. (on-est sound)

The (Definite Article)

Use 'the' for specific nouns or things already mentioned.

Example: The main reason for this trend is... (Refers to a specific reason you will now explain).
Example: The government should invest in the environment. (Refers to the general concept of the environment).

Prepositions of Time and Place (সময় ও স্থানের অব্যয়)

Common errors often involve prepositions.

In / On / At

Time: I have a meeting at 9 AM on Monday in the first week of July.
Place: He lives at 15 Green Road in Dhaka.

For vs. Since

For (duration): He has been studying for three hours.
Since (starting point): He has been studying since 6 PM.

Punctuation (বিরামচিহ্ন)

Correct punctuation is essential for clarity and is part of your GRA score.

Commas (,)

Use commas to separate items in a list and to separate clauses in complex sentences.

Example (List): The graph shows data for the UK, Germany, and France.
Example (Clause): Although technology has many benefits, it also has some drawbacks.

Apostrophes (')

Used for contractions (which should be avoided in formal writing) and possession.

Possession: The company's profits increased. (One company)
Possession: The companies' profits increased. (Multiple companies)

Common Mistakes to Avoid (সাধারণ ভুল যা এড়িয়ে চলতে হবে)

  • Countable vs. Uncountable Nouns: "Many informations" is wrong. "A lot of information" is correct.
  • Redundancy: "The price increased up" is wrong. "The price increased" is correct.
  • Spelling: Common misspellings like 'goverment' (government), 'enviornment' (environment), 'nowdays' (nowadays).

A Practical Practice Plan (একটি বাস্তবসম্মত অনুশীলন পরিকল্পনা)

Step 1: Identify Your Weaknesses (নিজের দুর্বলতা চিহ্নিত করুন)

When you practice Writing or Speaking, get feedback and identify your most common grammar mistakes. Are they with tenses, articles, or prepositions?

Step 2: Focused Practice (লক্ষ্যভিত্তিক অনুশীলন)

Dedicate time each week to focus on one grammar rule. For example, this week, focus only on using the Present Perfect tense correctly in your practice essays.

Step 3: Proofread and Edit (প্রুফরিড এবং সম্পাদনা করুন)

After writing a practice essay, spend 5 minutes checking it ONLY for grammar errors. This trains your brain to spot mistakes. Read your writing out loud to catch awkward phrasing.

Step 4: Active Learning (সক্রিয় শিক্ষা)

When you read articles in English, pay attention to how sentences are structured and how tenses are used. Don't just read for meaning; read to understand the grammar.
