Reading Passage 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 1–13, which are based on the passage below.

The story of rice

A  More than half of the people on Earth eat rice every day, and for many of them a meal without it hardly counts as a meal at all. In Bangladesh, as in much of Asia, the word for ‘rice’ and the word for ‘food’ are closely linked, and a polite way of asking whether someone has eaten is to ask whether they have had their rice. Few crops have shaped human life so deeply, yet the story of how a wild grass became the food of billions is still being pieced together.

B  Rice was first grown in Asia at least 9,000 years ago. Archaeologists have found ancient grains in the valley of the Yangtze River in China, while genetic studies suggest that a second, separate line of cultivated rice developed later in the Ganges plain of South Asia. Early farmers slowly selected plants whose seeds stayed on the stalk rather than falling to the ground, making harvesting far easier. Over thousands of years this patient selection turned a wild plant into a dependable crop.

C  Unlike most cereals, rice is happy to grow with its roots under water. This is not because the plant needs to be flooded, but because flooding suits the farmer: standing water keeps down weeds and pests, and protects the young plants from sudden changes in temperature. To hold the water, farmers built level fields surrounded by low earth walls, known as paddies. On steep hillsides in Bali and the Philippines, generations of farmers carved the slopes into great staircases of terraces, a form of landscape engineering that is still in use today.

D  Growing rice in paddies demands a great deal of shared work. Water has to be channelled from rivers and divided fairly between neighbouring fields, and the seedlings, which are usually raised in a nursery bed, must be planted out by hand at the right moment. Some historians have argued that these demands encouraged strong village communities and careful systems of cooperation, although others believe the link between rice and social organisation has been exaggerated.

E  In the 1960s, many Asian countries faced a crisis as populations grew faster than harvests. Scientists at a research institute in the Philippines responded by breeding new ‘high-yielding’ varieties with short, stiff stems that did not fall over when heavy with grain. One variety, IR8, could produce several times as much rice as traditional types when given fertiliser and plenty of water. Its success helped to spread what became known as the Green Revolution, and famine became far less common across the region.

F  The new varieties brought problems as well as plenty. They depended on chemical fertilisers and pesticides that many poor farmers could not easily afford, and their spread led to the loss of thousands of local varieties, each adapted to its own soil and climate. Flooded paddies also release methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, and rice farming now uses a large share of the world’s fresh water.

G  Today researchers are trying to build a more sustainable future for the crop. Some have developed varieties that can survive for up to two weeks completely under water, a vital quality in flood-prone countries such as Bangladesh. Others are testing a method called ‘alternate wetting and drying’, in which fields are allowed to dry out between floodings, saving water and cutting methane without reducing the harvest. The humble grain, it seems, still has a great deal to teach us.

Rice farming today

The Green Revolution greatly increased harvests, but the new varieties relied on fertilisers and (11) that poor farmers struggled to buy. Flooded fields also give off (12) , which contributes to global warming. Scientists have now bred rice that can live under water for two weeks, which is especially useful in (13) countries.

Reading Passage 2

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 14–26, which are based on the passage below.

Drinking the sea

Can desalination solve the world’s water shortage?

A  Ninety-seven per cent of the water on our planet is salty, and of the small fraction that is fresh, most is locked away in ice caps and glaciers. As populations grow and droughts become more frequent, many countries are turning to an idea that sailors have dreamed of for centuries: removing the salt from seawater to make it fit to drink. The process, called desalination, already supplies water to more than 300 million people, and the number is rising every year.

B  The oldest method imitates nature’s own water cycle. Seawater is heated until it turns to vapour, leaving the salt behind; the vapour is then cooled so that it condenses as pure water. This method, known as thermal distillation, is simple and reliable, and it is still widely used in the oil-rich countries of the Gulf, where energy has traditionally been cheap. Its great weakness is the enormous amount of heat required to boil large volumes of water.

C  Most new plants now use a technique called reverse osmosis. Instead of boiling the water, powerful pumps force it at very high pressure through a membrane, a thin sheet covered in pores so tiny that water molecules can pass through but salt cannot. Before it reaches the membrane, the seawater is filtered to remove sand, algae and other particles that would quickly clog the delicate surface. Reverse osmosis uses far less energy than distillation, and improvements in membrane design have cut its costs dramatically since the 1990s.

D  Even so, desalinated water remains several times more expensive than water taken from rivers or underground sources, and energy is the largest single cost. In countries that burn fossil fuels to power their plants, desalination also adds to carbon emissions. Engineers have therefore begun to pair plants with solar and wind farms, and some new designs recover energy from the high-pressure waste water, using it to help drive the pumps.

E  A second difficulty is what to do with the salt. For every litre of fresh water produced, a typical plant creates around one and a half litres of brine, a liquid roughly twice as salty as seawater, often mixed with chemicals used to clean the membranes. When this brine is pumped back into the sea, it tends to sink and spread across the seabed, where it can harm the creatures that live there. Careful design of outflow pipes can help the brine mix more quickly, and some researchers are exploring ways to extract valuable minerals such as magnesium and lithium from it.

F  Supporters of desalination argue that it offers something no other source can: a supply of water that does not depend on rainfall. For a city on the coast of a dry region, that security may be worth the price. Critics reply that it is usually cheaper and kinder to the environment to waste less of the water we already have — by repairing leaking pipes, reusing treated waste water and charging fairly for water so that people do not overuse it. Most experts agree that desalination should be one tool among many rather than a magic solution.

Reading Passage 3

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 27–40, which are based on the passage below.

The value of boredom

Boredom has a poor reputation. We think of it as a waste of time at best, and at worst as a cause of mischief, from teenage vandalism to adults’ late-night overeating. Faced with even a few spare minutes in a queue or on a bus, most of us now reach for our phones almost without thinking. Yet a growing group of psychologists believes that this constant flight from boredom may be costing us something valuable, and that a little more of the feeling might do us good.

What exactly is boredom? Psychologist Erin Westgate describes it as a signal that our attention is not engaged by what we are doing, or that what we are doing does not seem meaningful. In her view, boredom works rather like pain or hunger: it is unpleasant precisely so that we will act. A bored person is being told, in effect, that it is time to change something — to find a more interesting task, or to find a reason why the current one matters.

If boredom is a signal, it seems foolish to silence it every time it appears. Yet that is exactly what smartphones allow us to do. Sociologist David Morgan argues that by filling every empty moment with messages and videos, we never give the signal a chance to do its work. We escape the discomfort, but we also lose the push towards finding something more satisfying. The result, he suggests, is a kind of restless dissatisfaction that is in some ways worse than boredom itself.

There is also evidence that boredom can make us more creative. In one well-known experiment, psychologist Sandi Mann asked one group of volunteers to spend fifteen minutes copying numbers from a telephone directory — a deliberately dull task — while another group went straight on to the next activity. Both groups were then asked to think of as many uses as possible for a pair of plastic cups. The bored group came up with more ideas, and more original ones. Mann believes that when the outside world offers nothing of interest, the mind turns inward and begins to daydream, making the kind of unexpected connections on which creativity depends.

Not all boredom is helpful, however. The occasional dull afternoon is very different from boredom that is frequent and long-lasting, which has been linked to anxiety, depression and risky behaviour. People who are easily bored also tend to find it harder to concentrate. Westgate stresses that the aim is not to seek out boredom for its own sake, but to listen to it, and to resist the urge to drown it out immediately.

What might this mean in practice? Researcher Kai Lindqvist recommends building small ‘empty spaces’ into the day: a walk without headphones, a train journey spent looking out of the window, a few minutes of sitting quietly before starting work. Parents, too, might worry less when children complain that they have nothing to do. A child left alone with an empty afternoon may grumble at first, but will often invent a game or begin a project that no adult would have thought of. Boredom, it seems, is less an enemy to be defeated than a guide to be followed.
