You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 1–13, which are based on the passage below.

Jute: the golden fibre

A  For centuries the fields of Bengal have turned a brilliant green each monsoon as the tall stems of jute push towards the sky. The plant’s long, soft, shiny fibres, prized for their golden colour, gave it the name by which Bangladeshis still know it: the ‘golden fibre’. At the height of its importance, jute was the country’s most valuable export, and the delta of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers produced most of the jute used anywhere in the world.

B  Jute grows best in hot, humid weather with plenty of rain, and in the rich soil left behind each year by the great rivers’ floods. The seeds are sown in spring, and within about four months the plants may reach a height of three metres or more. Farmers harvest the crop by cutting the stems close to the ground, usually before the plants have finished flowering, when the fibre is at its finest.

C  Turning the stems into fibre is a slow and unpleasant task. The cut stems are tied into bundles and left under water — in ponds, ditches or slow-moving streams — for two to three weeks. During this stage, known as retting, bacteria in the water break down the soft tissue that holds the fibres to the woody core. Workers then stand waist-deep in the water, beating and stripping the fibres from the stems by hand. Finally the fibres are washed and hung on bamboo frames to dry in the sun before being sold.

D  Jute’s great commercial era began in the nineteenth century, when mills in the Scottish city of Dundee discovered that the fibre could be softened with whale oil and spun by machine. Later, huge mills grew up along the Hooghly River near Kolkata. Woven into sacking, jute was used to carry the world’s grain, coffee, sugar and cotton, and it became so central to the region’s economy that its price affected the fortunes of millions of farming families.

E  From the 1970s, however, jute faced a serious rival. Cheap synthetic materials made from oil, such as polypropylene, began to replace it in sacks and carpet backing. Demand collapsed, mills closed, and many farmers switched to growing rice instead. For a time it seemed that the golden fibre might fade into history.

F  More recently, concern about plastic pollution has given jute a second chance. Unlike synthetic fibres, jute is biodegradable, breaking down naturally in soil within a few months, and the plant absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide while it grows. Bangladesh has passed laws requiring jute packaging for certain goods, and scientists have developed new products ranging from jute-based plastics to fabrics for fashion. Whether this revival will last depends largely on whether jute products can be made cheaply enough to compete.

Reading Passage 2

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 14–26, which are based on the passage below.

The making of a cyclone

A  Few natural events are as frightening as a tropical cyclone. Known as hurricanes in the Atlantic and typhoons in the western Pacific, these vast spinning storms can measure hundreds of kilometres across and bring winds of more than 250 kilometres an hour. For the people living around the Bay of Bengal, where the coast is low and densely populated, cyclones have long been one of the greatest dangers of life.

B  Every cyclone needs fuel, and that fuel is warm water. Cyclones form only over oceans where the surface temperature is at least 26.5°C. As warm, moist air rises from the sea, it cools and its water vapour condenses into cloud and rain, releasing large amounts of heat. This heat warms the surrounding air, which rises even faster, drawing in more moist air from below. In this way the storm feeds itself, growing stronger for as long as it remains over warm water.

C  Because the Earth spins, air moving towards the centre of the storm does not travel in a straight line but is turned to one side, a deflection known as the Coriolis effect. This is what sets the storm rotating — anticlockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern. The effect is weakest at the equator, which is why cyclones almost never form within about five degrees of it.

D  A mature cyclone has a remarkable structure. At its heart lies the eye, a circle of calm and often clear sky where air gently sinks. Surrounding the eye is the eyewall, a ring of towering cloud where the strongest winds and heaviest rain are found. Further out, long curving rainbands spiral inwards towards the centre. At the top of the storm, the air that has risen through the eyewall flows outwards in all directions, high above the sea.

E  Much of the damage a cyclone causes comes not from wind but from water. As the storm approaches land, its winds push the sea ahead of it, and the low air pressure at its centre allows the water to rise further. The result is a storm surge, a sudden rise in sea level that can flood low-lying coasts for many kilometres inland. In 1970, a storm surge driven by the Bhola cyclone killed several hundred thousand people in what is now Bangladesh.

F  Since then, the toll from cyclones in Bangladesh has fallen dramatically, even though storms have not become any weaker. The country has built thousands of raised cyclone shelters, trained tens of thousands of volunteers to spread warnings by megaphone and radio, and planted mangrove forests along the coast to absorb the force of the waves. When a powerful cyclone struck in 2020, around two million people were moved to safety in advance, and the number of deaths was counted in dozens rather than thousands.

Reading Passage 3

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 27–40, which are based on the passage below.

Is it ever too late to learn a language?

Most people believe that children are natural language learners and adults are not. A child moved to a new country seems to soak up the local language within months, while the parents struggle for years and never lose their foreign accent. This common observation has encouraged a popular idea: that there is a ‘critical period’ in childhood after which a new language can never be fully mastered. But the reality, as recent research shows, is a good deal more interesting.

It is certainly true that age affects pronunciation. People who begin a language after their early teens very rarely sound exactly like native speakers, however long they practise. A large study of nearly 700,000 learners, published in 2018, also suggested that the ability to master grammar to a native-like level begins to decline in the late teens. On these two points, the evidence for an advantage in starting young is strong.

Yet in other respects adults are far from helpless. In the early stages, they usually learn faster than children, because they can use strategies that children lack: they can study grammar rules, use dictionaries, notice patterns deliberately and connect new words to the large vocabulary they already have in their first language. In classroom studies where children and adults receive the same amount of teaching, adults often make quicker progress, at least at first.

Why, then, do children so often end up ahead? Part of the answer lies not in the brain but in the circumstances of learning. A young child in a new country is surrounded by the language all day — at school, in the playground, on television — and has a strong need to fit in with other children. Adults, by contrast, often work in jobs where they can rely on their first language, socialise with people from their own background, and are more embarrassed about making mistakes. The child, in short, simply gets far more practice.

In my view, the myth of the critical period has done real harm. It discourages adults from starting, and gives them an excuse to stop when progress is slow. Of course, an adult beginner should be realistic: a perfect accent is unlikely, and that hardly matters, since being understood is far more important than sounding like a native. But an adult who is willing to practise regularly, to speak even when unsure, and to seek out real conversation can reach a very high level of skill.

Learning a language in later life may even bring benefits that go beyond communication. Several studies have found that bilingual people tend to develop the symptoms of dementia some years later than those who speak only one language, although researchers are still debating why. Whatever the reason, the message for adult learners is encouraging: it is never too late to begin.
