Reading Passage 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 1–13, which are based on the passage below.

A clear history: the story of glass

A  Glass is so much a part of modern life — in our windows, screens, bottles and spectacles — that it is easy to forget how remarkable it is. It is made from some of the commonest materials on Earth, chiefly sand, yet it can be transparent, strong, waterproof and endlessly reshaped. For most of history, however, glass was a rare luxury, and the techniques for making it were closely guarded secrets.

B  Nobody knows exactly where glass was first made. The Roman writer Pliny told a story of sailors who rested their cooking pots on blocks of soda on a sandy beach and found shining glass in the ashes the next morning, but modern scholars doubt that an ordinary fire could have been hot enough. The earliest known glass objects, small beads, come from Mesopotamia and date from around 2500 BCE. For many centuries afterwards, glass was used mainly for jewellery and tiny containers for perfume.

C  The great breakthrough came in the first century BCE, probably on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean, with the invention of glassblowing. A craftsman gathered a lump of molten glass on the end of a hollow iron pipe and blew into it, inflating it like a balloon. The bubble could then be shaped, stretched and cut while it was still soft. Glassblowing made it possible to produce vessels quickly and cheaply, and under the Romans glass cups and bottles became common household objects for the first time.

D  In medieval Europe, the most famous centre of glassmaking was the city of Venice. In 1291 its rulers ordered all glassmakers to move to the nearby island of Murano, officially to protect the city from fires caused by the furnaces, but also to prevent the craftsmen from leaving and sharing their secrets with rival cities. Venetian craftsmen developed a glass of unusual clarity, which they called cristallo, and their mirrors and decorated glassware were sold to wealthy customers across the continent.

E  Window glass remained a luxury for centuries. Early windows were made of small, uneven pieces held together by strips of lead, and many ordinary homes simply had wooden shutters or oiled cloth. The modern method for making large, perfectly flat sheets was not invented until the 1950s, when the British engineer Alastair Pilkington developed the float process. In this method, molten glass is poured onto a bath of liquid tin, where it spreads out and floats, forming a smooth, even surface on both sides as it cools.

F  Glass has also changed the way we see the world, quite literally. Lenses of polished glass made possible spectacles, which allowed people with poor eyesight to go on reading and working into old age. Later they led to the telescope and the microscope, instruments that revealed the moons of Jupiter and the tiny living cells of plants and animals. Without glass, much of modern science would have been impossible.

G  Today glass is entering new fields. Thin fibres of extremely pure glass carry most of the world’s internet traffic as pulses of light, and toughened glass protects the screens of billions of phones. Glass is also one of the few materials that can be recycled again and again without losing quality, although in many countries a large share of used glass still ends up in landfill rather than being collected and melted down.

Reading Passage 2

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 14–26, which are based on the passage below.

Seeing with sound

How bats find their way in the dark

A  For centuries, people wondered how bats could fly so skilfully at night, catching insects in total darkness without ever crashing into walls or branches. In the 1790s, the Italian scientist Lazzaro Spallanzani carried out a series of experiments to find out. He discovered that bats which had been blinded could still fly perfectly well, but that bats whose ears had been blocked flew helplessly into obstacles. He concluded that bats somehow ‘see’ with their ears, but he could not explain how, and his idea was widely ridiculed.

B  The mystery was finally solved in the 1930s by an American student, Donald Griffin, working with an engineer who had built a microphone able to detect very high-pitched sound. When Griffin held the device near flying bats, it picked up a stream of calls far too high for the human ear to hear. Griffin named the bats’ method ‘echolocation’: the animals produce sounds and listen for the echoes that bounce back from objects around them.

C  A hunting bat behaves rather like a ship using sonar. As it flies, it sends out short pulses of sound, often through its mouth but in some species through its nose. By measuring how long each echo takes to return, the bat judges how far away an object is; by comparing the echoes reaching its two ears, it can tell the object’s direction. Changes in the echo even reveal whether an insect is moving towards or away from it, and how quickly its wings are beating.

D  When a bat closes in on its prey, the rhythm of its calls changes dramatically. While searching, it may call around ten times a second, but in the final moments of an attack the rate rises to as many as 200 calls a second, producing a sound that scientists call the ‘feeding buzz’. These rapid calls give the bat an almost continuous picture of the insect’s position at the very moment it is caught.

E  Some of the bats’ prey have developed clever defences. Certain moths have ears that are sensitive to bat calls, and when they hear one approaching, they fold their wings and drop suddenly towards the ground. Others produce clicking sounds of their own, which may confuse the bat’s echolocation or warn it that the moth tastes unpleasant. This contest between hunter and hunted has continued, scientists believe, for tens of millions of years.

F  Echolocation has inspired human inventors as well. Engineers have studied bats while designing systems to help self-driving cars detect obstacles, and some blind people have taught themselves a simple form of echolocation, making clicking noises with their tongues and listening to the echoes to judge the size and position of nearby objects. Brain scans of such expert ‘clickers’ show that the part of the brain normally used for vision becomes active while they do it.

Reading Passage 3

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 27–40, which are based on the passage below.

The myth of multitasking

Many of us are proud of our ability to do several things at once. We answer emails during meetings, scroll through messages while watching television, and listen to podcasts while studying. Job advertisements often ask for candidates who can ‘multitask’, as though it were a valuable professional skill. Yet a large body of research suggests that, for most tasks that require thought, multitasking is largely an illusion — and an expensive one.

The basic problem is that the human brain cannot pay full attention to two demanding tasks at the same time. According to neuroscientist Paula Reyes, what feels like doing two things at once is really switching rapidly between them. Each switch carries a small cost: the brain must stop one set of rules and load another, and in the moment of changing, attention briefly falls away. Reyes compares it to a computer that must close one program before opening another. The delays are tiny, but they add up, and the more complex the tasks, the greater the cost.

How large is this cost? In a series of experiments, psychologist James Okafor asked volunteers to solve problems either one after another or by switching back and forth. Those who switched took up to 40 per cent longer to finish and made significantly more mistakes. Okafor points out that people rarely notice these losses, because the feeling of being busy is easily mistaken for the feeling of being productive.

There are some exceptions. Activities that have become automatic through long practice, such as walking or folding clothes, demand very little attention, and can be combined with conversation or simple listening without much loss. The difficulty comes when two tasks compete for the same mental resources — reading an email while trying to follow a lecture, for instance, since both depend on processing language. Driving while talking on the phone is especially risky: studies have shown that drivers in conversation react more slowly to hazards, even when they are using a hands-free device.

Perhaps the most surprising finding comes from the work of Clara Lindholm, who compared people who frequently use several forms of media at once with those who rarely do. Contrary to expectations, the heavy multitaskers performed worse on tests of switching between tasks, and were more easily distracted by irrelevant information. Lindholm suggests that habitual multitasking may weaken the ability to filter out distractions, although she accepts that it is not yet clear which comes first: it may be that people who are already easily distracted are simply drawn to multitasking.

What, then, should we do? Business consultant Tom Hartley advises his clients to work in ‘focus blocks’ — periods of 45 to 90 minutes in which they deal with a single task, with phones silenced and email closed. It is a simple idea, but in my view it reflects an important truth. In a world full of interruptions, the ability to concentrate on one thing at a time is becoming rarer, and therefore more valuable, than ever.
