Band 9  ~2 minutes

The meal I’d like to describe took place last Eid, at my grandparents’ house in a small village outside Comilla. It was the first time in almost three years that the whole extended family had managed to get together, so it felt like a real occasion.

There must have been around twenty-five of us — grandparents, aunts, uncles and a crowd of noisy cousins — all squeezed around a long row of tables in the courtyard. My grandmother had been cooking since dawn with the help of my aunts, and the smell drifting out of the kitchen was absolutely mouth-watering.

As for the food, it was a proper feast. There was fragrant beef biryani, chicken korma, a huge pot of dal, and fresh fish from the village pond, followed by my grandmother’s famous semai, a sweet vermicelli pudding that she only makes on special days.

What made it so memorable, though, wasn’t really the food, delicious as it was. It was the atmosphere — everyone talking over each other, sharing stories, teasing one another and laughing until our sides hurt. My grandfather even gave a short, rather emotional speech about how proud he was of the family, and by the end there wasn’t a dry eye at the table.

Looking back, I think that meal reminded me how precious those moments are. As we all get busier, getting everyone around one table becomes rarer, so I’ll treasure that afternoon for a long time.

Band 7  ~1.5–2 minutes

The meal I want to describe was last Eid, at my grandparents’ house in a village near Comilla. It was the first time in nearly three years that the whole family was together, so it was a special day.

There were about twenty-five of us — grandparents, aunts, uncles and many cousins — sitting around long tables in the courtyard. My grandmother started cooking very early in the morning with my aunts, and the kitchen smelled wonderful.

The food was amazing. There was beef biryani, chicken korma, dal, and fresh fish from the village pond. For dessert, my grandmother made her famous semai, a sweet pudding that she only makes on special days.

But the main reason I enjoyed it was not the food. It was the atmosphere. Everyone was talking, sharing stories and laughing a lot. My grandfather also gave a short speech about how proud he was of our family, and some people cried because they were so happy.

Now I think that meal showed me how important these moments are. Because everyone is busy, it is difficult to bring the whole family together, so I will always remember that day.

Part 3 — Discussion

4–5 minutes · deeper questions about food, culture & health

Answers here should be longer and more developed — opinion, reason, and often the other side too. উত্তর আরও দীর্ঘ।

1. Why is food such an important part of celebrations?

2. How have eating habits changed in your country in recent years?

3. Should the government do more to encourage healthy eating?

4. Do you think fast food is a threat to traditional cuisine?

5. Why do some people prefer to eat alone?

✅ Sample answers at 3 levels (Band 9 / 7 / 5–6) + Bangla explanations

Band 9

1. Sharing food is one of the oldest ways humans show generosity and belonging. Preparing a special meal takes time and effort, so offering it to guests is a way of saying they matter. In Bangladesh, for example, you simply can’t imagine Eid without biryani and sweets.

2. Quite dramatically. In cities especially, busy lifestyles mean people eat out or order food far more than before, and fast food has become a normal part of young people’s diets. At the same time, there’s a growing interest in health, so you see more people talking about calories and organic produce.

3. I think it has a role to play, yes. Clear food labels and limits on advertising junk food to children would help. However, governments can only do so much — ultimately, healthy eating starts with education and with what families cook at home.

4. To some extent. Young people are often more attracted to burgers and pizza than to traditional dishes, which take much longer to prepare. Even so, I don’t think traditional cuisine will disappear, because it’s so closely tied to family occasions and to people’s sense of identity.

5. For some it’s simply practical — they’re busy and eating alone is quicker. Others genuinely enjoy the peace and quiet after a hectic day. That said, I think regularly eating alone can be a little isolating, since mealtimes are one of the main chances we have to connect with others.

কেন ব্যান্ড ৯: মত + কারণ + উদাহরণ + বিপরীত দিক (Even so, That said), সমৃদ্ধ শব্দ (generosity, belonging, organic produce, identity, hectic, isolating)।

Band 7

1. Sharing food is a traditional way to show that you are generous and that people are welcome. Cooking a special meal takes a lot of time, so offering it shows that the guests are important. In Bangladesh, Eid without biryani and sweets is impossible to imagine.

2. They have changed a lot. In cities, people are busy, so they eat out or order food much more than before, and young people eat a lot of fast food. But many people are also more interested in health now, so they think about calories.

3. Yes, I think it should do something. Clear labels on food and limits on junk food adverts for children would help. But the government cannot do everything — healthy eating also depends on families and education.

4. Partly, yes. Young people often prefer burgers and pizza to traditional dishes, which take a long time to cook. However, I do not think traditional food will disappear, because it is an important part of family events and our culture.

5. Some people are just busy, so eating alone is faster. Others enjoy some quiet time after a stressful day. But I think eating alone all the time can be lonely, because meals are a good chance to talk to other people.

কেন ব্যান্ড ৭: মত ও কারণ আছে। তবে ভাষা সরল ও বিশ্লেষণ কম গভীর।

Band 5–6

1. Sharing food is traditional way to show you are generous. Cooking special meal take lot of time so it show the guest is important. In Bangladesh Eid without biryani and sweet is impossible.

2. It change a lot. In city people are busy so they eat outside or order food more than before, and young people eat lot of fast food. But many people also think about health now.

3. Yes i think government should do something. Clear label on food and limit the junk food advert for children will help. But government can not do everything, family is also important.

4. Partly yes. Young people like burger and pizza more than traditional food because traditional food take long time to cook. But i think traditional food will not disappear because it is part of our culture.

5. Some people are busy so eating alone is fast. Some people enjoy quiet time after stressful day. But eating alone every time can be lonely because meal is good chance for talk with people.
