Topic: Getting around
1. How do you usually travel to work or university?
2. How long does it take?
3. Do you like using public transport?
4. Has transport in your city improved recently?
✅ Sample answers at 3 levels (Band 9 / 7 / 5–6) + Bangla explanations
Band 9
1. Mostly by metro these days. I take a rickshaw to the nearest station and then it’s a straight run into the city centre, which has made my life a great deal easier.
2. About forty minutes door to door, which is a huge improvement. Before the metro opened, the same trip by bus could easily take an hour and a half in rush-hour traffic.
3. On the whole, yes. The metro is clean, punctual and air-conditioned, so it’s a pleasure to use. Buses are a different story, though — they’re usually packed and you never quite know when one will turn up.
4. Without a doubt. The metro rail and the new flyovers have cut journey times considerably, although traffic jams are still a daily headache in many parts of the city.
Band 7
1. Usually by metro. I take a rickshaw to the station and then the train goes directly to the city centre, which is very convenient.
2. About forty minutes, which is much better than before. By bus, the same journey sometimes took an hour and a half in heavy traffic.
3. Mostly, yes. The metro is clean, on time and air-conditioned, so I like it. But buses are often crowded and you do not know when they will come.
4. Yes, definitely. The metro and new flyovers have made journeys shorter, but traffic jams are still a big problem in many areas.
Band 5–6
1. Usually by metro. I take rickshaw to station and then train go direct to city centre, it is very convenient.
2. About forty minute, much better than before. By bus same journey take sometimes one and half hour.
3. Mostly yes. Metro is clean, on time and have AC so i like. But bus is crowded and you don’t know when it come.
4. Yes definitely. Metro and new flyover make journey short, but traffic jam is still big problem in many area.

Topic: Cars and driving
1. Can you drive?
2. Would you like to own a car in the future?
3. Is it expensive to own a car in your country?
4. What do you think of the traffic where you live?
✅ Sample answers at 3 levels (Band 9 / 7 / 5–6) + Bangla explanations
Band 9
1. Not yet, I’m afraid. I had a few lessons last year but I found the traffic in Dhaka so intimidating that I put it on hold. I’d like to pick it up again eventually.
2. Possibly, but not while I live in the city. With the metro improving, a car would be more of a burden than a convenience. If I moved somewhere quieter, it would be a different matter.
3. Very much so. Imported cars carry heavy taxes, and on top of that you have fuel, parking, maintenance and often a driver’s salary, so it’s really only affordable for better-off families.
4. Frankly, it’s chaotic. There are far too many vehicles for the roads, and drivers don’t always follow the rules, so even short trips can take an age at peak times.
Band 7
1. Not yet. I took a few lessons last year, but the traffic in Dhaka made me nervous, so I stopped. I would like to try again later.
2. Maybe, but not while I live in the city. Because the metro is getting better, a car would be more trouble than it is worth. In a quieter place, I would like one.
3. Yes, very. Imported cars have high taxes, and you also have to pay for fuel, parking, repairs and sometimes a driver, so only richer families can afford it.
4. It is very bad. There are too many vehicles and many drivers do not follow the rules, so even short trips can take a long time in rush hour.
Band 5–6
1. Not yet. I take some lesson last year but Dhaka traffic make me nervous so i stop. I like to try again later.
2. Maybe but not in city. Metro is getting better so car is more trouble. In quiet place i want one.
3. Yes very. Imported car have high tax and you also pay fuel, parking, repair and sometime driver so only rich family can buy.

4. Do you get travel sick?
✅ Sample answers at 3 levels (Band 9 / 7 / 5–6) + Bangla explanations
Band 9
1. For long distances I’d pick the train every time. It’s cheaper than flying, far more comfortable than the bus, and you get to watch the countryside roll by.
2. Yes, quite often actually, on overnight buses to Cox’s Bazar. It saves a night’s hotel bill, but I have to say I rarely get more than a couple of hours’ sleep.
3. I usually listen to podcasts or catch up on reading, and if I’m with friends we end up chatting and snacking the whole way. Time flies when you’ve got good company.
4. Only on winding roads, like the hill roads in Bandarban. Sitting at the front and keeping my eyes on the horizon usually does the trick.
Band 7
1. For long journeys I prefer the train. It is cheaper than flying, more comfortable than the bus, and you can enjoy the view of the countryside.
2. Yes, many times, on night buses to Cox’s Bazar. It saves money on a hotel, but I usually cannot sleep very well.
3. I usually listen to podcasts or read, and if I am with friends we talk and eat snacks all the way. The time passes quickly.
4. Only on roads with many bends, like the hill roads in Bandarban. Sitting at the front and looking far ahead usually helps.

The journey I’d like to talk about is a train trip I took from Dhaka to Sylhet about two years ago, during the monsoon season.
I went with three close friends from university, just after our final exams. We’d been talking about going to see the tea gardens for ages, and we finally decided to just book the tickets and go.
We set off early in the morning on an intercity train. It was a seven-hour journey, and honestly, the train itself became part of the adventure. We had a compartment almost to ourselves, so we spent the time chatting, playing cards and buying tea and fried snacks from the vendors who hopped on at every station.
Along the way, the scenery was breathtaking. Because it was the rainy season, everything was an incredibly vivid green — endless paddy fields, rivers that had burst their banks, and towards the end, rolling hills covered in tea bushes. At one point a heavy downpour started and we just stood by the open door watching the rain sweep across the fields.
What made it so memorable, though, wasn’t just the views. It was the first trip I’d ever planned and paid for myself, without my parents, so it felt like a real step into adulthood. Looking back, it was also the last time the four of us were together before we went our separate ways for jobs, which makes the memory even more precious.

The journey I want to talk about is a train trip from Dhaka to Sylhet two years ago, in the rainy season.
I went with three close friends from university after our final exams. We had wanted to see the tea gardens for a long time, so we finally bought tickets and went.
We left early in the morning on an intercity train. The journey took seven hours, but it was fun. We had almost a whole compartment, so we talked, played cards, and bought tea and snacks from the sellers at the stations.
The views were beautiful. Because it was the rainy season, everything was very green — paddy fields, full rivers, and later, hills covered with tea plants. At one point it rained heavily, and we stood by the door watching the rain.
I remember it well for two reasons. It was the first trip I planned and paid for myself, so I felt independent. Also, it was the last time the four of us were together before we started jobs in different cities. That is why the memory is so special to me, and I still look at the photos from that trip.

5. Will people travel less in the future because of technology?
✅ Sample answers at 3 levels (Band 9 / 7 / 5–6) + Bangla explanations
Band 9
1. There’s no single solution, but investing in reliable mass transit — metro lines and proper bus networks — is the foundation. Beyond that, cities can charge for parking or for driving into the centre, and encourage offices to stagger working hours so that everyone isn’t on the road at once.
2. It’s an appealing idea, and it would certainly help low-income workers and cut car use. The problem is funding: someone still has to pay for maintenance and staff, so free transport could mean higher taxes or a worse service. Heavily discounted fares for students and the elderly might be a more realistic compromise.
3. Enormously. My grandparents mostly travelled by boat or on foot, and a trip to the capital was a major undertaking that might happen once in a lifetime. Today, people think nothing of crossing the country in a day or flying abroad for a holiday.
4. Undeniably, it’s one of the fastest-growing sources of carbon emissions. That said, for long distances there’s often no practical alternative, so I think the answer lies in cleaner fuels and more efficient aircraft, along with flying less for short trips that could be made by train.
5. For business, probably yes — video calls have already replaced a lot of work trips. But for leisure, I doubt it. Seeing a place on a screen is no substitute for actually being there, so I suspect people will keep travelling for pleasure.
Band 7
1. There is no single answer, but building good public transport, like metro lines and better buses, is the most important. Cities could also charge people for parking or for driving in the centre, and offices could start work at different times.
2. It is a good idea, and it would help poor workers and reduce car use. But someone has to pay for it, so it might mean higher taxes or a worse service. Cheaper tickets for students and old people might be better.
3. A lot. My grandparents usually travelled by boat or walked, and going to the capital was a big event. Now, people travel across the country in one day or fly abroad on holiday easily.
4. Yes, it causes a lot of pollution. However, for long distances there is often no other choice, so we need cleaner fuel and better planes, and people should take the train for short trips.
5. For work, probably yes, because video calls have replaced many business trips. But for holidays I do not think so. Seeing a place on a screen is not the same as being there.
Band 5–6

2. It is good idea and it help poor worker and reduce car. But somebody must pay so maybe tax is higher or service is bad. Cheap ticket for student and old people is better.
