Band 9 ~2 minutes
Something I bought a few months ago that I’m genuinely delighted with is a second-hand bicycle — nothing fancy, but it has completely changed my daily routine.
I found it through an online marketplace, where a student who was moving abroad was selling it at a very reasonable price. I went to see it the same evening, took it for a quick test ride around the block, checked the brakes and the gears, and we agreed on a deal on the spot. He even threw in a helmet and a lock for free, which was a lovely bonus.
The main reason I decided to buy it was the traffic. My journey to university by bus used to take well over an hour each way, and I was spending a small fortune on fares. I worked out that a bike would pay for itself within a couple of months, and of course it doesn’t produce any pollution either, which matters to me.
What I love most about it is the freedom it gives me. I can weave through the traffic, my journey now takes about twenty-five minutes, and I arrive feeling energised rather than frustrated. On top of that, I’ve become noticeably fitter without ever setting foot in a gym.
All in all, it was probably the best value purchase I’ve ever made. It’s a good reminder that the things that improve our lives most aren’t always the most expensive ones.

Overall, it was probably the best thing I have ever bought. It shows that the most useful things are not always the most expensive.

✅ Sample answers at 3 levels (Band 9 / 7 / 5–6) + Bangla explanations
Band 9
1. There are several reasons, I think. Advertising is extremely persuasive and often makes products seem like the key to happiness or status. Shopping can also be a form of emotional comfort — people buy things to cheer themselves up after a stressful day, even though the good feeling rarely lasts.
2. It’s transformed them, really. People now compare prices instantly and expect next-day delivery, so they shop far more frequently, often in small amounts. The downside is that it’s become dangerously easy to buy on impulse, with just a couple of clicks and no time to reconsider.
3. I believe it can be, yes. Young children can’t always tell the difference between entertainment and a sales message, so they’re particularly vulnerable to manipulation. That’s why I think there should be strict limits, especially on advertising unhealthy food during children’s programmes.
4. Absolutely. Many young people leave school without understanding basic things like budgeting, interest or how loans work, and that can lead to serious debt later on. A few practical lessons could make an enormous difference to their future wellbeing.
5. In some ways, yes. There’s certainly far more choice and much more pressure, partly from social media, to keep up with trends. That said, I’ve also noticed a growing movement towards buying less, repairing things and choosing second-hand, so it isn’t entirely one-directional.
Band 7
1. There are a few reasons. Advertising is very persuasive and makes products seem like the way to be happy or important. Also, some people shop to feel better after a bad day, even though the good feeling does not last long.
2. It has changed them a lot. People can compare prices quickly and get fast delivery, so they shop more often. The problem is that it is very easy to buy things without thinking, because it only takes a few clicks.
3. Yes, I think it can be. Young children cannot always understand that an advert is trying to sell something, so they are easy to influence. I think there should be limits, especially on adverts for unhealthy food.
4. Yes, definitely. Many young people finish school without knowing how to make a budget or how loans work, and this can cause debt problems later. Some practical lessons would really help them.
5. In some ways, yes. There is more choice and more pressure from social media to follow trends. However, some people are now trying to buy less and choose second-hand things, so it is not the same for everyone.
