"Long before any other animal was domesticated, wolves and early humans began forming what would eventually become one of history's most successful partnerships. Genetic evidence suggests that dogs diverged from wild wolves at least fifteen thousand years ago, possibly even earlier, making them the first domesticated species. One widely accepted theory holds that wolves less fearful of humans began scavenging near early hunter-gatherer camps, gradually growing more tolerant of human presence over many generations. Humans likely favoured these calmer, more approachable wolves, feeding them scraps and eventually breeding the tamest individuals together, a process that over time produced animals recognisably different from wild wolves. Genetic and skeletal evidence shows this selective process resulted in physical changes as well, including smaller teeth, floppier ears, and a more varied range of coat colours than seen in wild wolf populations. Researchers studying ancient dog remains have also found evidence that dogs migrated alongside humans across continents, arriving in the Americas thousands of years before European contact. Today, this ancient partnership continues to evolve, with dogs bred for an enormous range of specialised roles, from herding livestock to detecting medical conditions through scent."
