Personal Introduction Not Scored

Read the prompt, then record your introduction.

"Please introduce yourself. In your introduction you may wish to include information about your interests, your plans for study, and why you are taking this test."

1 · Read Aloud

Prepare, then read the text aloud clearly and naturally.

"Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth, with some species able to grow almost a metre in a single day. Because it is light, strong and quickly replaced, bamboo has been used for scaffolding, furniture and housing across Asia for centuries, and engineers are now exploring how it might replace steel and timber in modern construction."
0:35

Trap: the scoring engine checks every word — skipping or mispronouncing one costs both Reading and Speaking marks.

2 · Repeat Sentence

Listen once, then immediately repeat the sentence exactly.

Show the sentence (after you try)

"Please make sure your mobile phone is switched off before the examination begins."

3 · Describe Image

Prepare, then describe the chart in your own words.

Smartphone Ownership in Bangladesh (% of adults) 0% 20% 40% 60% 80% 2012 2015 2018 2021 2024 Urban Rural
0:25

Trap: compare the two lines, not just one — e.g. "both rose steadily, but urban ownership stayed well ahead, although the gap narrowed slightly in proportion".

4 · Retell Lecture

Listen to the lecture (taking notes if you like), then retell its key points.

"Today's topic is the immune system and, in particular, how vaccines train it to recognise disease. When a virus or bacterium enters the body for the first time, the immune system needs several days to identify it and produce antibodies that target it. During that delay, the infection can spread and make a person seriously ill. After the infection is defeated, however, the body keeps memory cells that remember the invader, so a second encounter triggers a much faster response. A vaccine takes advantage of this memory by exposing the immune system to a harmless version or part of the germ, so that memory cells are created without the person having to suffer the disease. When enough people in a community are vaccinated, the disease struggles to spread, which also protects those who cannot be vaccinated, an effect known as herd immunity."

5 · Answer Short Question

Listen to the question, then answer with a single word or short phrase.

Show expected answer (after you try)

"The heart." — a short phrase is enough.

6 · Summarize Group Discussion

Listen to the discussion, then give a spoken summary covering both viewpoints.

Speaker A: "I think cities should make public transport completely free, because it would cut traffic and pollution and help low-income workers the most."

Speaker B: "It sounds attractive, but somebody still has to pay for drivers, fuel and maintenance, and if fares disappear, the money would have to come from taxes or service cuts."

Speaker A: "That's fair, but some cities that tried free buses saw large increases in passengers, so the benefits to the environment and the economy might outweigh the costs."

Speaker B: "Maybe, although several of those cities found that many new passengers had previously walked or cycled rather than driven, so traffic barely changed."

Moderator: "So one speaker supports free transport for its social and environmental benefits, while the other questions its cost and whether it really takes cars off the road."

Trap: mention at least two different viewpoints — not just one speaker's opinion.

7 · Respond to a Situation

Prepare, then speak an appropriate response to the situation.

"Your flatmate has been playing loud music late every night during your exam week. Speak to your flatmate politely, explain the problem and suggest a solution."
0:20

Trap: stay polite and specific: explain the effect on you (exams, sleep), then suggest a practical compromise such as headphones or a time limit.

8 · Summarize Written Text

Read the passage, then write a one-sentence summary (5-75 words) in 10 minutes.

"Many universities now offer degree apprenticeships, programmes in which students work for an employer while studying part-time for a degree, with tuition fees paid by the employer and, in some countries, partly by the government. Supporters argue that these programmes allow young people to gain a qualification without accumulating large student debts, while developing practical skills and professional contacts that make them highly employable when they graduate. Employers benefit by training staff in exactly the skills their business needs and by building loyalty among young recruits. Critics, however, point out that the number of places remains small compared with traditional degrees, that apprentices may miss out on aspects of university life such as societies and full-time study, and that balancing demanding work with academic deadlines can be exhausting, particularly in the final year of the programme."

Degree apprenticeships let students earn a qualification without debt while gaining practical skills and giving employers well-trained, loyal staff, although places are limited and combining work with study can be exhausting.

9 · Write Essay

Write a 200-300 word argumentative essay in 20 minutes.

"Rising life expectancy is one of the greatest achievements of modern medicine, yet it presents societies with serious economic and social challenges. In my view, although the disadvantages are significant, they can be managed, and the advantages of longer lives ultimately outweigh them.

The most obvious drawback is financial. As the proportion of older people increases, fewer workers must support more retirees through taxes, which places pressure on pension systems and public healthcare. Japan, for instance, now spends a growing share of its national budget on elderly care, and some rural areas face labour shortages because so many young people have moved to cities.

However, older citizens also make substantial contributions. Many continue working, volunteering or caring for grandchildren, which allows parents to remain in employment. Furthermore, experienced employees bring knowledge and judgement that younger workers lack, and older consumers have created entire new industries, from travel to health technology.

Moreover, the problems of ageing are largely matters of policy rather than inevitable crises. Governments can raise the retirement age gradually, encourage flexible work and invest in preventive healthcare so that people stay independent for longer. Therefore, I believe that an ageing population is a benefit to be planned for, not a burden to be feared."

"Nowadays people live longer because medicine is better. This has some problems, for example governments must pay more pension and hospitals become busy. Also there are less young workers in some countries. But old people also help society, they take care of grandchildren and some of them still work. I think the advantages are more than disadvantages if the government make good plans for the future."
