"Today's lecture is about how rechargeable lithium-ion batteries actually store and release energy. Inside a lithium-ion battery, lithium ions move between two electrodes, typically called the cathode and the anode, through a liquid or gel electrolyte that allows ions to pass but blocks the direct flow of electrons. When the battery discharges, powering a device, lithium ions flow from the anode to the cathode, while electrons are forced to take a separate path through the external circuit, and it is this flow of electrons through the device that actually provides usable electrical power. Charging the battery essentially reverses this process, using an external power source to push the lithium ions back from the cathode to the anode, storing energy chemically until it is needed again. Over hundreds or thousands of charge cycles, the electrode materials gradually degrade through small structural changes, which is why batteries slowly lose their maximum capacity over the years, even with careful use.
